My favorite sign
September 14, 2011
My favorite sign is this bronze plaque. It is posted to the left of the rectory doors of the Unitarian Universalist church on Elmwood Avenue.
Of course there are no WMDs in the church. Nor is the plaque notice there to reassure anyone with a Plutonium allergy that she may enter safely. It is there to remind us that nuclear weapons do not belong anywhere. Call me cynical, but the plaque does bring more to mind than that:
- Are there nuclear weapons at the Unitarian church on Main Street? There’s no sign there.
- And who knew the Unitarians even had the Bomb?
- Did the pastor inform the N. Koreans so they’ll know to keep their nukes away from this church?
- Do the ushers ever have to tell people, “I’m sorry. You’ll have to leave your dirty bomb outside.”
- You’d never see a message like this on a synagogue. Jews won’t admit to having nuclear capabilities (although everyone knows we do).
